Dr. Garland Allen (1922-2014) was born in Tuckerman, Ark., as the middle child to Roy and Evelyn Rich Allen. His parents only had the opportunity to receive an eighth-grade formal education. Roy Allen was a self-taught farmer and veterinarian by profession. He researched and studied through numerous books of animal science and then went to Little Rock, where he took and passed the Arkansas State Veterinarian Examination.

At 16 years old, Garland Allen was ordained a Baptist preacher. He attended Ouachita College in Arkadelphia, Ark. Graduating with a teacher鈥檚 degree in 1944, he enrolled in Southern Seminary in Louisville, Ky. He soon had a three-year Bachelor of Divinity degree and his master鈥檚 degree. He then received a Doctorate in Church History there. His minors were Old Testament and historical theology.

Allen had a variety of teaching experiences. In Walnut Ridge, Ark., he taught at Southern Baptist Junior College (now Williams College). After four years, he resigned and moved to Memphis, Tenn., where he taught English and history in Millington Public High School near Memphis. He was a member of the Phi Alpha Theta National Honor Society for History. While teaching there, he attended Memphis State University and received a Master of Arts degree in European History.

Allen left in 1961 to begin his tenure at 猫咪头条. During his academic career at 猫咪头条, he was an academic counselor, taught history and religion, and served as chair of the religion department.

Garland Allen teachingHis academic influence at 猫咪头条 was balanced by an outstanding effort in the athletic ranks as a legendary golf coach of the Runnin鈥 Bulldogs from 1962 to 1989. When 猫咪头条 was a junior college, his teams won several district championships. Allen鈥檚 success continued as a golf coach at Gardner- Webb as a four-year institution. He won National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championships in 1976 and 1977 and produced several All鈥揂mericans. Other teams were ranked second, third, fourth, fifth, seventh, 19th and, in 1989, 13th nationally. Allen was honored as NAIA Coach of the Year in 1976 and 1977, and as a tribute to his success as a coach, Allen was inducted into the 猫咪头条 University Sports Hall of Fame on Nov. 6, 1993.

Allen set the bar high during his tenure as 猫咪头条鈥檚 head golf coach, directing the program to nine appearances in the NAIA National Tournament. According to Allen, the players experienced success due to the fact that he encouraged them to remain individuals. Allen stressed personal relationships among players. His former players maintained contact with him over the years. He said the golfers just kept coming back.

Allen was honored by being chosen professor emeritus in 1990, the year after he retired. Of his experiences in education, he shared, 鈥淚 never regretted being in education鈥攏ever for a minute. One of the reasons I managed to stay young was because of continuing association with like- minded people, people who are genuinely dedicated to the welfare of the students.鈥

Allen was married to Mary Evelyn Garrison in 1949 after meeting in 1944 in Louisville, Ky. Evelyn, originally from Lincolnton, N.C., graduated from Mars Hill College, Baylor University and Carver School of Missions in Louisville (WMU Training), which is now a part of the Seminary. Until 1987, she taught English at Crest High School and Crest Middle School in Cleveland County, N.C., and served as a librarian.

The Allens raised two children, Susan and William Henry.

Over the years Allen was involved in several community organizations. He was a member of the Cleveland County Senior Golf Association, was active in Boiling Springs Baptist Church, was a member of the Lion鈥檚 Club, and was a Boy Scout Commissioner for Troop 117 (a position held for 35 years). As commissioner, Allen helped many young men through decision making, raising money, and encouraging scouts to get merit badges and to attend the Court of Honor.

At 猫咪头条, Allen served on many committees in various positions and was active in the Bulldog Club. Allen said that personal relationships with both students and faculty through the years brought him much satisfaction and enjoyment.

Professor Emeritus of Economics and Management
Glenn Bottoms

Dr. Glenn Bottoms was born one of five children to Ary Glenn Bottoms and Emily Blackman Bottoms in 1946 in Emory, Ga., and passed away on May 12, 2023. He always assumed he would be a teacher. Three generations before him taught science, and he had ancestors that taught before the Civil War. Bottoms continued the teaching tradition. He truly loved watching students become interested and passionate about the knowledge he was relaying to them.

Bottoms attended his hometown university, Emory. There he pursued a degree in economics and political science鈥攁nd a young woman named Nancy Rogers. At Emory, Bottoms ran and lettered in cross country and track. He was also president of Alpha Phi Omega, a campus service organization.

Upon graduating Emory in 1969, Glenn and Nancy were married. Both taught middle school for two years and then the couple moved to Pukatawagan, a town in Manitoba, Canada. They had responded to a newspaper ad to teach junior high at a Federal Reserve school. Bottoms remembers celebrating temperatures of 32 degrees because above freezing meant spring was on its way.

Bottoms completed his Master of Arts in Economics at the University of Ottawa, Canada. The Bottoms returned to Georgia and warmer weather where Bottoms obtained is Ph.D. in Economics in 1981 from Georgia State University in Atlanta. Durning his doctoral studies, Bottoms taught at Western Carolina University as an Assistant Professor of Economics and as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Economics at West Georgia University in Carrolton.

While functioning as president and general manager of Computer Alternatives Inc. based in Asheville and Wilmington, N.C., Bottoms heard about a teaching opportunity in 猫咪头条 University鈥檚 Broyhill School of Management. John Dryer, Associate Dean (Provost), interviewed Bottoms and offered him the job. Bottoms accepted and, in 1985, became the first professor in the GWU business program with a Ph.D.

Unlike the larger universities where he had taught such as Western Carolina and George Washington University, 猫咪头条 offered him the chance to get to know his students. He was a firm believer that teaching the individual was the most important aspect of being a professor. He valued the relationships and Christian environment a school the size of 猫咪头条 offered him. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 why I wanted to teach,鈥 he commented. 鈥淚 wanted to know the students.鈥

猫咪头条 foresaw the importance of technology and sent Bottoms to George Washington University as a Visiting Associate Professor. There he completed postdoctoral studies in Engineering Management in Information Technology. He returned to GWU and served as the lead professor of management information systems and computer science.

Technology was an ever-changing and developing field. Internet did not make its way to Boiling Springs until 1995. 鈥淎t one time I had the most powerful computer in all of Boiling Springs,鈥 Bottoms laughed. The computer science students would come to the Bottoms鈥 residence to use his computer and end up staying the whole night. It was an exciting time to be in the technology sector.

Bottoms spoke extensively at educational conferences about his knowledge of economics and computer information systems with talks such as: 鈥淔urther Analysis of Stability of General Economic Equilibrium: Applications of Differential Topology,鈥 鈥淐ognitive Factors in Graphical Human-Computer Interfaces鈥 and “International Trade Policies and Development in Third World Countries.鈥 He also contributed to the Laudon and Laudon textbook, Essentials of Management Information Systems, second through fifth editions.

In addition to his degrees, publications and speaking experience, Bottoms could read, write and speak French and Cree, an aboriginal language of Canada. He could also read and understand Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.

At 猫咪头条, Bottoms was a member of the Master of Business Administration (MBA) planning committee, chair of two subcommittees for reaccreditation, and faculty parliamentarian. Within his community, Bottoms served as a board member for the Cleveland County chapter of Habitat for Humanity and as a board member for Cleveland County Coalition for the Homeless.

Bottoms shared a special connection with the international students, recalling how bright and full of energy they were. He and Nancy often opened their home to them. He remembers enlisting the help of a college benefactor to provide funds for a student to return home to Guatemala to be with his family after the death of his sister.

鈥淕ood place, good students, good people,鈥 Bottoms stated about his years at 猫咪头条. Since 1985, Dr. Glenn Bottoms, his wife, Dr. Nancy Bottoms, and their son, Ary Bottoms, a GWU graduate and employee, chose to make 猫咪头条 and Boiling Springs their home.

Dean Emeritus, School of Business
James Edward “Jim” Crawley

James “Jim” Crawley (1930- 2014) was the founding dean of the 猫咪头条 School of Business, where he also served as a professor of management. Crawley was born and educated in Rutherford County, N.C., and after high school he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served for four years. After completing his term of duty, he worked as a civilian trainer for the U.S. Air Force.

Seeing the need for further鈥 education, Crawley entered鈥 Clemson University and 鈥╣raduated three and a half years 鈥╨ater with a degree in mechanical鈥 engineering. Upon graduation he鈥 went to work for Dupont Inc. His work for Dupont took him to many locations throughout the United States and Germany prior to making his home in Shelby, N.C. In 1988, he moved from Germany to the Cleveland County community to lead a collaborative venture between Dupont, Phillips and the Verbatim companies to create a new optical disc production plant in Kings Mountain, N.C.

While manager of the Kings Mountain plant, Crawley was very active in community affairs. He served the Economic Development Commission, the United Way, Cleveland Tomorrow, Cleveland Regional Medical Center, Communities in Schools and Executive Roundtable. He was a supporter of the Cleveland County Family YMCA and active in Shelby Presbyterian Church. He was recognized by the Shelby Lions Club in 1994 as the Citizen of the Year, an honor he saw as his highest.

Following retirement from Dupont in 1994, Crawley became the first dean of the 猫咪头条 University School of Business. During his term as dean, Crawley moved the School into its current home in the newly renovated Hamrick Hall. He was instrumental in significantly increasing the number of doctorates on the faculty of the School of Business. The Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree was expanded to the Statesville and Marion campuses in North Carolina. He also assisted the University in the organization of some of its procedures and was instrumental in encouraging the hiring of the first director of Human Resources.

Crawley continued his service to the community even while holding his post of dean of the School of Business. He was elected to the Cleveland County Board of Commissioners in 1994 and served as commissioner until his retirement from that position in 2000. Crawley was board chair for two terms on the County Commission. One of his most significant actions on the Board of Commissioners was to push for the consolidation of all public schools in Cleveland County, which was successfully enacted in 2000. In the spring of 2004, the Cleveland County school system became a countywide system bringing the county schools, the city schools, and the Kings Mountain schools under one umbrella. The Cleveland County Chamber honored Crawley with a 鈥淩esolution of Commendation鈥 for his service as a commissioner seeking unification and collaboration.

Jim and his wife, Marcie, retired to Summerville, S.C., where he had earlier opened a plant for Dupont.
