Dr. Charlotte H. Stephens Presents at International Dementia Conference in Australia

Dr. Charlotte H. Stephens, associate professor in the Hunt School of Nursing and a Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner presented at the International Dementia Conference sponsored by Hammond Care and held in Sydney, Australia, on Sept. 5-6. Over 2,000 researchers, thought leaders, caregivers and administrators gathered for the event. Over the two days, the lived experience was reviewed for new strategies for care management, emotional support, and disease support. Stephens delivered a concurrent session podium presentation that included her personal story of dementia of a parent, caring for dementia patients and educating their family members, as well as an overview of dementia care in the United States. Panel discussions offered educational and procedural strategies for law enforcement, emergency medical professionals, and emergency departments to de-escalate agitation and partner with caregivers in times of challenges. Researchers from the United Kingdom, Canada, and Ireland presented their work on dementia care support and education. The overarching theme was the need for early diagnosis and education of patients and caregivers.

Professors, School of Divinity

Dr. Hebert Palomino, professor of pastoral care and counseling in the 猫咪头条 University School of Divinity, accepted an invitation to be the main speaker for the Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care Continuous Education Week, held at the Paraguayan Baptist Medical Center in Asuncion, Paraguay, South America. His trip was made possible by economic support from the School of Divinity. 

As part of this event, the Paraguayan Baptist Medical Center and the Health Department of the Paraguayan Government will celebrate the National Day of Organ Transplants on July 9. The first heart transplant in Paraguay took place on that day in 1996 at the Baptist Medical Center. Palomino was the chaplain who facilitated the care process for the first heart transplant patient and will speak at the service commemorating the special occasion. Palomino is grateful for the School of Divinity Dean Dr. Robert Canoy and the University for helping him to be a part of these events.

Dr. Lane Wesson co-authored an article with Dr. Joey Lord titled “Residency Teacher Support Beyond BTSP and How High Leverage Practices Impact Success” that will be published in the Spring 2024 edition of the Journal of Middle Level Education.聽 Dr. Wesson presented the research at the North Carolina Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (NCACTE) Fall Forum in September of 2023.聽 She is also scheduled to present at the North Carolina Middle Level Education Inspire Conference in March of this year.聽

Associate Professor of Journalism and Communications and Chair of the Department of Communication, Art, & Design Dr. Kortni Alston Lemon has been awarded the 2025 Leibner Cooper Grant for Creative Productions on the History of Media. Her project is titled: “Rosalynn Carter鈥檚 Caring Call: How Former United States First Lady鈥檚 Historic Compassionate Legacy Has Transformed Mental Health Journalism and Continues to Transform Newsrooms.” Focusing on Carter’s compassionate legacy, “Rosalynn Carter鈥檚 Caring Call” is a multimedia audio mini-series, airing on Lemon’s podcast, “The Compassionate Newsroom.” The episodes explore Carter鈥檚 significant impact on mental health journalism. Through historical perspectives and contemporary interviews, the series examines how Carter鈥檚 empathetic leadership and her establishment of the Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism have fundamentally reshaped the coverage of behavioral health issues. Lemon is a former news director and television reporter turned happiness scholar, TEDx speaker, and Transformational Trainer. Fueled by her passion to support the news industry, she is a sought-after speaker on training journalists on workplace well-being. Carter appointed her to serve on the Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism Advisory Board.

July – August 2024

Chair of the Department of Communication, Art and Design and Associate Professor of Journalism and Communication Dr. Kortni Alston Lemon has represented and highlighted her work at 猫咪头条 University this year on a global and national scale. As a happiness researcher and scholar, she presented her research to various prestigious organizations, such as the American Press Institute, Radio Television Digital News Association and National Association of Science Writers. She also and guided journalists and news leaders on applying positive psychology to enhance workplace well-being.

In July 2024, she will participate in the American Press Institute’s summit designed to help news leaders focus on belonging at work. Her role will help build morale and foster positive work cultures through positive psychology. In August 2024, at the NABJ’s convention in Chicago, she will interview Chant茅 Griffin at the NABJ Authors Showcase. Lemon advised Griffin, who is an outgoing Rosalynn Carter Mental Health Journalism Fellow. Griffin’s book, “Loving Your Black Neighbor as Yourself,” published by Penguin Random House, significantly contributes to the dialogue on racial healing.

June 2024

On June 13, 2024, Lemon will address news leaders on prioritizing mental health at the RTDNA’s exclusive news leadership retreat in Milwaukee, Wis. Her session, “Prioritize Your Mental Health and Transform Your Newsroom into Workplace Well-being Warriors,” will take place at the historic Pfister Hotel. On June 25, 2024, she will lead a 90-minute self-care workshop for journalists at the inaugural National Summit to End Stigma around Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders in Salt Lake City, Utah.

She’s earned two significant certifications: Mental Health First Aid from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing and the Question, Persuade, and Refer (QPR) Gatekeeper Training from the QPR Institute. 

May 2024

Her husband, Ken, is the 23rd national president of the NABJ. In her role as chair of the Department of Communication, Art, and Design and as a professor of journalism and communication at 猫咪头条, she’s encouraged to see both students and faculty actively joining this influential organization. In May 2024, she played a pivotal role in the NABJ membership drive, further expanding the organization鈥檚 reach. 

On May 22, she participated in the Rosalynn Carter Mental Health Journalism panel titled “Mental Health Matters Too: How to Practice Self-Care When Reporting on World Events and Dealing with Social Media Feedback.” Mrs. Carter appointed Lemon as an advisory board member for the Rosalynn Carter Mental Health Journalism Fellowship.

April 2024

In April 2024, she participated at the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) convention in Las Vegas by organizing and moderating a panel discussing the importance of human and social capital by incorporating industry professionals into the classroom. This convention is a unique combination of academic and industry, with BEA offering more than 250 sessions, events, and workshops, attracting over 1,200 attendees. BEA registrants also have access to the National Association of Broadcasters show, which draws more than 100,000 industry leaders in broadcasting. Her panel included representatives from WBTV and WSOC-TV in Charlotte, N.C., to share their experiences and insights into the 猫咪头条 Department of Communication, Art, and Design Professional Takeover Day. This initiative allows industry professionals to offer real-world perspectives to students.

March 2024

In March 2024, the executive board of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) established a new task force dedicated to community wellness, and Lemon serves as co-chair. The task force is dedicated to promoting physical and mental health among members. This prestigious role of developing a task force continues to elevate NABJ’s position as the world鈥檚 largest organization for journalists of color.

Dr. Rowe and Prof. Manahan were accepted and completed the Genomics Education Partnership鈥檚 recent Carolinas regional node new member training, with full expenses paid. GEP is a network that includes over 200 institutions where faculty incorporate undergraduate research into course curriculum. The training covered implementation of primary scientific research projects for students, centered in bioinformatics and genomics for upper level molecular Biology courses. This is a transformational opportunity for students to complete molecular biology primary research on our campus and be co-authors on upcoming papers on gene annotations. In addition to completion of projects in upper level courses, students would also be able to complete projects through programs such as the Summer Scholars program and the Honors program.
