category: Faculty Emeriti - In Memory Of D. Doris Jones By Office of University Communications On August 25, 2022 Professor Emerita of Sociology Doris Jones D. Doris Jones (1925-1998) was born in Greenville, S.C. She was the daughter of Walter Hobert and Azelia King Jones. After graduating from Mauldin High School, Mauldin, S.C., in 1942, Jones entered Furman University, Greenville, S.C., where she earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. While serving as a full-time student, Jones worked six-nights a week to help fund her education. She completed her student teaching in the Parker School District. She remained there for two years teaching high school social studies and serving as the women鈥檚 basketball coach. In 1954, Jones received her master鈥檚 degree in theology from Southwestern Baptist Seminary and began her college teaching career at Wingate College. She served as dean of women for two years. In 1956 she came to 猫咪头条 where she taught sociology, anthropology, criminology, survey classes, and religion. She served as dean of women for five years. In 1965, she was one of only 40 internationally recognized faculty members to participate in the National Science Summer Institute Study of cliff dwellings of the Pueblo Indians in Colorado. She received her master鈥檚 degree in sociology in 1968 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1971, she attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, to study research in methodology. With this knowledge of how to survey, she conducted a needs assessment survey of displaced homemakers for Cleveland County. In 1987, after 32 years of loyal service, she retired from 猫咪头条 and was selected faculty emerita of sociology. After her retirement, Jones travelled and spent much of her time as an artist, hand painting China. In 1990, she attended the International School of China Painting in England.
