As a student in the Birth to Kindergarten program at GWU, you will learn about the development stages children experience from birth through age five. By studying the learning characteristics of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, you will acquire useful techniques and strategies to measure cognitive, social, emotional and communication development. Students may choose a licensure or non-licensure track. The 120-credit-hour program will be offered in an online format.

In addition to the University’s required general education and prerequisites, the Bachelor of Science in Birth-Kindergarten Education through the Online Undergraduate Program requires 43 hours in the major, along with 30 required minor hours. Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education

In addition to èßäÍ·Ìõ University’s required general education and prerequisite courses, an additional 34 hours of credit is required for a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education degree. The professional education minor is required for undergraduate students seeking licensure at the K-12 level. A non-licensure track for qualifying elementary and middle grades candidates is available. 

The Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education requires a minor in Professional Education. The minor includes 27 credit hours. The optional 14-credit-hour concentration in Exceptional Children (EC) prepares candidates to support diverse learners and become successful teachers of exceptional children.

Students will not be permitted to complete more than 50 percent of the minor until formally admitted to the Teacher Education Program. Students must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program a minimum of one full semester prior to the semester in which they student teach.

As an English Education student at GWU, you’ll participate in a semester-long internship, called student teaching, where you will be an apprentice teacher at a local public school, working one-on-one with a veteran teacher, and gain experience in a variety of classroom environments. As part of the Teacher Education program, you will also be required to complete a field teaching assignment in a number of different classroom environments with a 15-week assignment as a student teacher comprising your final semester at GWU.
