Strategic Athletics Restructuring Expands Opportunities and Positions 猫咪头条 for Division I Growth

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. 鈥 猫咪头条 University announced a strategic restructuring of its athletics sponsorship offerings designed to strengthen 猫咪头条鈥檚 position in the evolving Division I landscape by aligning resources with long-term priorities and expanding opportunities for student-athletes.

The restructuring will add women鈥檚 flag football and women鈥檚 acrobatics and tumbling while discontinuing the men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 tennis programs. Both tennis programs will conclude competition following the 2026 season.

鈥淎s the NCAA landscape continues to evolve, it was critical for us to evaluate future opportunities while also making thoughtful, strategic resource allocation decisions,鈥 said Brendan Fahey, vice president for athletics and athletic director. 鈥淭his restructuring will enable us to provide additional opportunities for student-athletes and introduce two sports that are growing rapidly nationwide. We are excited to grow our department with the addition of two quickly evolving NCAA sports and expand each program鈥檚 footprint within the region.鈥

The addition of women鈥檚 flag football and women鈥檚 acrobatics and tumbling will create approximately 80 new participation opportunities for student-athletes, supporting continued growth and competitive balance within the athletics program.

Women鈥檚 acrobatics and tumbling was added as an NCAA championship sport following a vote by NCAA members from all three divisions at the 2026 NCAA Convention. The NCAA鈥檚 first acrobatics and tumbling championship is projected to take place in spring 2027.

Women鈥檚 flag football continues to gain national momentum and was added to the NCAA鈥檚 Emerging Sports for Women program, making the sport eligible to pursue championship status through the emerging sports pathway. 猫咪头条 will join conference peers in sponsoring the sport, including Charleston Southern University and the University of North Carolina at Asheville, both of which have announced women鈥檚 flag football programs beginning competition in the 2027鈥28 academic year.

The decision followed a comprehensive review of 猫咪头条鈥檚 entire athletics portfolio that examined participation trends, competitive sustainability, facilities needs and long-term resource alignment across all sports. University and athletics leadership conducted the review with the support of the 猫咪头条 Board of Trustees. Student-athletes and coaches in the affected programs were informed of the decision prior to the public announcement.

鈥淭he decision to discontinue our tennis programs was an extremely difficult one,鈥 Fahey said. 鈥溍ㄟ渫诽 University is deeply grateful for the contributions of our coaches, student-athletes and alumni and for the way they have represented our athletics department throughout the years. We will work with each student and provide support for their future academic and athletic endeavors.鈥

All student-athlete scholarships will be honored for those who choose to remain enrolled at 猫咪头条 and complete their degrees. Support will also be provided to student-athletes who choose to transfer in order to continue competing. In addition to receiving assistance from their coaching staffs during this transition, all tennis student-athletes will have access to student counseling services and university resources.

Women鈥檚 tennis head coach Jim Corn, who is in his 20th season leading the program during the 2025鈥26 academic year, guided one of the university鈥檚 most consistently high-achieving programs both academically and competitively. Under his leadership, the women鈥檚 tennis team earned Division I ITA All-Academic honors in 18 of the past 19 seasons and recorded multiple top-three conference finishes, including a runner-up finish at the Big South Conference Championship in spring 2025.

Men鈥檚 tennis head coach Mike Griffith, a four-time Big South Coach of the Year, previously announced his intention to retire following the conclusion of the 2026 spring campaign, closing a stellar 24-year head coaching career at 猫咪头条. Griffith led the Runnin鈥 Bulldogs to their first-ever Big South Tournament Championship in 2025, multiple regular-season conference titles and consecutive 20-win seasons, while building a nationally ranked program and a strong record of academic excellence.

Additional details regarding timelines, staffing and competition for women鈥檚 flag football and women鈥檚 acrobatics and tumbling will be announced as the programs move forward.

Alumnus, Former Trustee, and Lifelong University Friend Leaves Legacy

GWU Trustee Tom Watson

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. 鈥 The 猫咪头条 University community mourns the loss of Tom Watson, a beloved alumnus, former trustee, and tireless advocate for education, who passed away peacefully on August 22, 2024, at the age of 81. Watson’s life was marked by a deep commitment to 猫咪头条, where he – competed as a student-athlete on a championship squad, served as a dedicated member of various boards, and was a constant presence in the university’s athletic and academic circles.

猫咪头条 President William Downs shared that Watson鈥檚 love of the University was legendary. “Tom Watson was the absolute embodiment of dedication and loyalty to 猫咪头条 University. He frequently came to campus, always sought us out with a smile, and invariably shared a story that would end with an expression of affection for his alma mater.鈥 Downs continued, 鈥淚鈥檒l always be personally grateful for his support and wise counsel.  As a trustee and as a lifelong advocate for his beloved school, Tom created and has now left a positive and lasting legacy for our community. We will be forever indebted to Tom for his service, for his collegiality, and for his commitment, which have enriched the lives of countless students, faculty, staff, and alumni. We shall miss him dearly, but we are comforted in knowing that Tom Watson will continue to inspire us all as we strive to uphold the values he so passionately championed.”

Born in Great Falls, S.C., Watson’s early life was steeped in the values of hard work and community. He excelled in sports at Maiden High School (N.C.), where his prowess in football, basketball, and baseball set the stage for his future endeavors. His athletic journey continued at Lenoir-Rhyne College (Hickory, N.C), where he was part of the 1960-61 regular season basketball championship team.

When Watson came to 猫咪头条 in 1962, even he did not know the influential foundation he would begin to build for the college in Boiling Springs, N.C. Watson played for the Runnin鈥 Bulldogs basketball squad, contributing to their first college championship in the 1962-63 season. He earned his Associate of Arts degree in 1963, and his connection to 猫咪头条 would endure long after his graduation. His experiences on the court, combined with the mentorship of faculty, staff and coaches, shaped his lasting allegiance to the University.

He was a lifetime member of the 猫咪头条 Bulldog Club, a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, and served on the Board of Trustees, just wrapping his second term in 2023. His loyalty to the University was recognized through numerous accolades, including his induction into the 猫咪头条 Gallery of Distinguished Alumni in 2009, being named Alumnus of the Year in 2010, and receiving the Meritorious Service Award in 2012. These honors reflect the profound impact Watson had on the 猫咪头条 community, not only as a supporter but as a leader whose influence extended across generations of those who have called 猫咪头条 home.

Tom Watson with Leah Clevenger and trustee

Beyond his formal roles, Watson was known for his unwavering support of 猫咪头条 athletics and various university programs. His presence was a staple at university events, where his jovial spirit, kind demeanor, and ever-present smile endeared him to all who knew him. Whether cheering on the Runnin鈥 Bulldogs or working behind the scenes to advance university initiatives, Watson’s devotion was both personal and profound. His ability to see projects through to success was a hallmark of his character, earning him a reputation as a reliable and dedicated advocate for the causes he placed his commitment.

The Watson family also established a scholarship at 猫咪头条 that supports student-athletes and the Bulldog Club. Nate Evans, Vice President of Advancement for 猫咪头条 noted, 鈥淭om鈥檚 legacy at 猫咪头条 is one of unwavering loyalty and friendship. He frequently visited campus to reminisce, catch a game, and create new, cherished memories. His passing leaves a void in the community, but he leaves a legacy of appreciation and support that will continue to resonate for years to come.鈥

Watson鈥檚 contributions to education extended far beyond 猫咪头条. After completing his studies, which included an additional degree from Lenoir-Rhyne College, a Master of Educational Administration from Appalachian State University (Boone, N.C.) in 1974, and an Educational Specialist degree in 1976 (also from ASU), he dedicated his career to shaping the lives of young people. Watson served in various roles, including teacher, coach, athletic director, and principal in the North Carolina school system. His tenure at institutions like Newton-Conover Junior High, West Lincoln High School, and Claremont Elementary showcased his commitment to fostering a love of learning and mentoring the next generation.

Even in retirement, Watson’s influence continued. He was inducted into the Catawba Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 2017, a testament to his impact on the local sports community. His nearly 25 years as a league secretary and administrator for high school conferences underscored his dedication to athletics and education.

Watson is survived by his wife of 59 years, Brenda Kay Honeycutt Watson, and their two sons, Thomas Hiott Watson III and Lance Honeycutt Watson. A celebration of Watson鈥檚 life will be held on Sunday, Aug. 25 at First Methodist Church, Conover, N.C.

As 猫咪头条 reflects on the life and legacy of Tom Watson, his memory serves as a reminder of the profound impact one individual can have on a community through dedication, kindness, and an unyielding commitment to excellence. His contributions to 猫咪头条 University and the field of education will be remembered with deep gratitude and admiration.

Prayer Gathering and Observance Event Featured Dr. Eric Davis as Speaker

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. 鈥 Faculty, staff and community members gathered on May 25th at 猫咪头条 University to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in defense the United States while serving in the armed forces. 鈥淢emorial Day is our solemn responsibility to carry out our lives in ways that would have made those who lost theirs proud,鈥 proclaimed 猫咪头条 University President William Downs.

猫咪头条鈥檚 Memorial Day remembrance service provided opportunities to consider the fallen, acknowledge their contributions, and to emphasize why this day is so vitally important for the nation.

Eric Davis speaks at Memorial Day observance

GWU alumnus, Dr. Eric Davis, employee support manager and lead chaplain for Cleveland County Government, offered remarks and a devotional reflection. 鈥淚n an attempt to honor the lives of those who died in battle, Decoration Day was observed on May 30, 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of Gen. John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former Union sailors and soldiers,鈥 noted Davis. 鈥淭he name, 鈥楧ecoration Day,鈥 came from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags. Today, Memorial Day is a day for remembrance of those who have died in service to our country.鈥

Vice President for Christian Life and Service and University Chaplain Dr. Josh Parrott led in a welcome and invocation. Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Music Dr. Aaron Rice presided over the singing of the national anthem, and Vice President for Advancement Nate Evans offered a responsive reading. Assistant Dean of Students Brian Arnold officiated over a moment of silence and directed the tolling of the bell, 21 times. This is the highest military honor for those who died defending freedom and democracy.

鈥淔rom the inception of our country there have been many who have offered the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms鈥 All of these men and women made sacrifices because they believed in our rights as citizens of these United States to honor God and worship freely,鈥 added Davis.

The program鈥檚 close featured Associate Vice President of Marketing Wilson Brooks playing Taps, and Associate Minister to the University for Student Ministries Neal Payne providing the benediction.

Missing Man Table Memorial Day Observance

The Office of Alumni Relations also displayed a 鈥淢issing Man Table鈥 in the Tucker Student Center reserved for the missing comrades in arms, the fallen soldiers. The table featured numerous items including a bible, red ribbon, a single red rose, an inverted glass, a pinch of salt, a lemon slice, and a lone candle. Each item represents the emotions and feelings reserved for those who did not come home. The ceremonial table symbolizes that these courageous men and women are with us in spirit.

The Memorial Day observance and prayer gathering is an annual tradition at 猫咪头条 and was established three years ago by President Downs.

鈥淭oday, our own daily stresses and struggles seem small鈥o very small鈥n comparison to those endured by the men and women that we have gathered to honor鈥hose from our own community who answered the call to defend freedom,鈥 noted Downs. 鈥淭hose from our own community who overcame fear to face down evil, those from our own community who boarded ships or planes and raced toward conflict鈥ather than shrinking from it.鈥

Broadcasting and Sim Racing Gives Blake McCandless, 鈥17 and 鈥20, Chance to Race for Real

鈥淓very role no matter how small is important to the common goal鈥濃攖his is the mantra that Blake McCandless lives by. While building his talents as a broadcaster, the two-time alumnus of 猫咪头条 University has taken every opportunity to learn. He strives to be a team player, develop connections and serve others.

His persistence and talent even gained the attention of NASCAR hall-of-famer Dale Earnhardt Jr.  Twice, Earnhardt has mentioned McCandless as someone who has a future in motorsports broadcasting.

Earnhardt鈥檚 most recent endorsement came as McCandless found himself in a place he never imagined鈥攂ehind the wheel of a race car鈥攄riving, for the first time, in two races at Hickory Motor Speedway. The grandson of legendary drag racer Herb 鈥淢r. 4-Speed鈥 McCandless, he鈥檚 only ever driven cars on iRacing, a computer-simulated racing game that organizes, hosts and officiates online racing on virtual tracks all around the world, including a training model for Hickory Motor Speedway. Because iRacing offers a variety of officially licensed vehicles to choose from and provides laser-scanned replicas of the world鈥檚 greatest racing circuits, McCandless said it flattens the learning curve as a driver gets behind the wheel of a real race car.

Finishing sixth in the second race, McCandless proudly sported the new GW Runnin鈥 Bulldog on the hood of a car owned by Landon Huffman. 鈥淚t was awesome to showcase 猫咪头条, and the whole rebrand,鈥 McCandless related. 鈥淚 think the new logos and the whole revamped energy around the school is really great. It was cool to have the Bulldog on board and at least it got a pretty good show. We may not have been up front, but a lot of people were watching.鈥

McCandless graduated in 2017 with a degree in sport management and in 2020 with a Master of Business Administration. He was manager for the men鈥檚 basketball team and became interested in broadcasting. He started showing up to events, offering to do whatever job was needed. 鈥淚 wanted to show people that I can show up, and I can work hard,鈥 McCandless asserted. 鈥淣o matter what role I was filling, whether I was running a camera or doing replays or anything like that, I was trying to be around, hands-on and doing anything that鈥檚 necessary. If you show up and work hard, people notice and are more willing to let you try things.鈥

His latest opportunities in the broadcast booth came through his iRacing hobby. In 2016, he and a friend started providing commentary for online racing groups. It was fun way to earn some money while he was in college.

The pastime led to more recognition in simulated racing circles. McCandless started broadcasting races on the iRacing competitive ladder in 2020, covering the eNASCAR iRacing Road to Pro Series campaign.

When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down live NASCAR events, the networks turned to iRacing to fill their time slots. Program directors needed people familiar with simulated racing to coach their announcers on the difference. McCandless was tapped to help prepare the TV announcers.

As iRacing broadcasting opportunities slowed down, McCandless received the ultimate, and totally unexpected, boost in his career: an endorsement from Earnhardt, who competes in a few iRacing events and had heard McCandless announce races. In June 2021, Earnhardt commented on his weekly podcast that somebody ought to take a look at McCandless as a broadcaster or pit reporter.

鈥淎ll of a sudden when somebody like him says something like that it carries a lot of weight and a lot more attention is paid, too,鈥 McCandless reflected. 鈥淚 reached out to him and told him that I didn鈥檛 know what to do to make it happen, but I would do anything, shadow somebody, to see if I could make it work.鈥

Earnhardt arranged for him to shadow two guys who work for NBC, and after that, people started calling him. 鈥淚 was able to secure a pit reporting position with Pit Row TV; utility work with NASCAR on NBC; and the job announcing at Ace Speedway (Elon, N.C.),鈥 McCandless recounted.

A year later on June 7, 2022, Earnhardt mentioned McCandless again in a tweet saying, 鈥淭his guy is a talent and has a future in motorsports broadcasting.鈥 The post featured a photo of McCandless wearing a 猫咪头条 basketball shirt. In the Twitter thread, McCandless made a comment wondering what the new Runnin鈥 Bulldog logo would look like on his car. Less than a week later, he was at Hickory Motor Speedway with the GW Bulldog along for the ride.

McCandless was grateful for the experience and said it would help him to be a better track announcer. 鈥淩acing was awesome, there’s no adrenaline rush or feeling like being behind the wheel of a race car,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 got to see how much of a thrill it can be. I also think that it’s a long and grueling sport. It was great to have the opportunity to sit behind the wheel. Hopefully, I will be able to do it a couple more times. Maybe throughout the year. The broadcast booth鈥攊t’s nice and air-conditioned in there鈥攊s where I’m most comfortable. I get as much enjoyment watching it and being able to share that experience with people as much as being a part of it, too.鈥

University Records Highest Numbers Since 2011

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擶ith profound gratitude for its loyal alumni and friends, 猫咪头条 University celebrates a historic milestone. At a time when most universities are reporting fewer donors, GWU has experienced a significant increase.

For fiscal year 2022, the University recorded the highest number of unique donors (2,177) since 2011. These donors provided one of the highest dollar amounts in recent history, helping the University to reach over $6 million in receipted gifts. Additionally, benefactors have committed $1.37 million in new pledges and planned gifts.

鈥淭his milestone shows that despite tough economic times, Bulldogs are relentless and willing to invest in GWU鈥檚 future,鈥 praised Nate Evans, vice president for Advancement. 鈥淭his support will enhance our facilities, strengthen our instruction and ultimately bolster the 猫咪头条 experience for our students.鈥

Gifts provide support for numerous 猫咪头条 programs, educational pursuits, athletics and more. Scholarships, capital projects, and academic improvements are all areas where GWU donors invested their financial resources this year. Gifts are made possible because of the selfless support of individuals, churches, foundations and companies around the world.

On April 7, 2022, 猫咪头条 recorded the most single-day donations in school history. Double Dawg Day is the University鈥檚 annual day of focused giving, and on that day, more than 1,286 donors gave a record total of $766,131. Contributions came from 42 states and as far away as Italy and Liverpool, England.

鈥淚t鈥檚 exciting to see Bulldogs across the nation stand behind the mission of this great University,鈥 Evans added. 鈥淲e are grateful to our alumni and friends for their dedicated support.鈥

猫咪头条 President William Downs believes the best is yet to come as the school seeks to build stronger relationships with current donors while cultivating a varied and more diverse group of supporters beyond the established norms.

鈥淏ulldog Nation is a loyal bunch, and the determined efforts from our new Advancement team are helping us connect with a wider circle of donors who genuinely care about GWU鈥檚 mission,鈥 affirmed Downs. 鈥淭his institution that we now call 猫咪头条 is in its 117th year, and like those who came before us we dare to dream. We dream about growing opportunities for our students so that they may make positive and lasting impacts after they graduate鈥hat鈥檚 the most compelling reason to give, and our generous donors understand that students will always be our top priority.鈥
