By Office of University Communications On October 31, 2024 Donors Receive a $10 E-Gift Card and Hoodie for Helping to Replenish Blood Supplies BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The Disc Golf Club at èßäÍ·Ìõ University is hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive on Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Faith Hall, Tucker Student Center. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, hundreds of blood drives have been canceled, resulting in thousands of blood donations going uncollected. The American Red Cross needs the community’s help to restock the critically-needed blood products. For so many people living with urgent medical care needs, the need for blood doesn’t stop for disasters of any kind. Disc Golf Club President Mason Martin, a senior computer science major, said the club looked for ways to raise money that would also give back to the community. This partnership does both and meets the needs in the areas devastated by Hurricane Helene. All donors will receive a free $10 e-gift card and hoodie. American Red Cross Eligibility Guidelines: Be in good general health and feeling well. Maintaining your iron level is an important part of being a healthy donor. Be at least 17 years old in most states (16 years old with parental consent in some states; six states require parental consent for 17-year-olds) Weigh at least 110 lbs. Additional height and weight requirements apply for donors 18 years old and younger and all high school student donors. Have not donated blood in the last 56 days. Tips for donating blood: Drink an extra 16 oz. of water (or other nonalcoholic drink) before your appointment. Eat a healthy meal, avoiding fatty foods like hamburgers, fries or ice cream. Wear a shirt with sleeves that you can roll up above your elbows. Let us know if you have a preferred arm or particular vein that has been used successfully in the past to draw blood. Relax, listen to music, talk to other donors or read while you donate. After you donate: Enjoy a snack and relax for a few minutes in the refreshment & recovery area; have some cookies or other snacks. Drink an extra four (8 oz.) glasses of liquids and avoid alcohol over the next 24 hours. Don’t do any heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for the rest of the day. èßäÍ·Ìõ University is North Carolina’s recognized leader in private, Christian higher education.
